Abstract:

As a comprehensive and inspiring political metaphor, the „waves of democracy” approach has come to shape our historical understanding of democratization. As we have apparently reached the end of the third wave, according to Samuel Huntington’s periodization, political science should continue the exploration of the valuable insights provided by this metaphor. Scientists working in the fields of comparative politics and democratic theory have also engaged in the normatively oriented effort to study and promote the consolidation and qualitative improvement of the third-wave democracies.
