Abstract:

In this report we have:

- Had an historical point of view of Artificial Intelligence and Expert Systems, discussing four different approaches;

- Discussed the problems associated with legal rezoning and legal expertise and proposed a perspective on practical reasoning;

- Given a precise definition and a description of the main critical compounds of an legal expert system;

- Discussed the opportunity of an open source legal expert system.

This work has the role to inform the jurists about the opportunity to use expert systems as legal tools. In this paper I argued that it is important to use as much as possible the expert systems that have been developed already and to stay opened to any chance to give its contribution to their extension.
